MENDIP WINTER SERIES 2005/'06

ROUND 4

ROUND 5 .
March 5th 2006

The last round of the Mendip Winter Series saw another damp start with grip varying from 'yuk' to 'not too bad' by the end of the day. This was in stark contrast to the week before when, at the Serpent Test day, the grip was incredible.
In the second round of the 1/10 Touring cars, yours truly was lucky enough to pick the correct tyres for the conditions and to top qualify. This luck was to run out in the next round when a front wheel came off resulting in a distinct lack of steering at the end of the straight and a rapid visit to a very unfriendlyfence...Not the one to be with!
Top UK Works HPI driver Robin Hammett graced us with his presence, and promptly won the 1/10 A final.

The highlight of the day though was the 1/8 Final. By the time that this Final was run the track was almost completely dry and the grip was pretty high.

Pole man Andrew Hastings shot into the lead with the hard charging trio Ashley Groovy, Ian Milford and Kevin Taylor. The race for 2nd place turned into a 3 way tustle between Ashley, Ian and Kevin. Kevin 'just' looked to be the quickest by a nat's dooh-dah but was to be plagued by troubles with his car. Ian was not short of some teething troubles with a new motor which allowed Ash to hang on to 2nd place. 1st placed man Andrew then seemed to suffer problems of his own and drop back down the field behind our intrepid threesome.

Some over excitement on the part of Mugen driver Kevin T led to Ashley's upside down Serpent in front of race control. Ashley recovered reasonably quickly to take up the charge again.
Eventually, helped a little by the troubles with the Mugen boys cars, Ashley carried on to win the race.
I'm sorry to report only on the 1/8 final, but it was the only one that I saw...and what a cracker it was!

My own 1/10 A final came to an abrupt end when, despite shouts from my spannerman Wayne 'Groovy' that the motor was overheating, the said motor decided to momentarily seize. The moral here is...do what I say, not what I do!!! Whoops!

Don't forget that next weekend is the Mugen Test Day. My daughter's birthday so I can't attend (I heard that Kevin !!) but see you all the following Sunday at the first of the Club Championships.

NOTE:
If anyone would like to write race reports for any of the Mendip meetings then please let me know. It would be nice if it could be done on a regular basis, but one off's woul be ok. The reports must be sent to me via e-mail and in WORD format. Of course there must be no bad language and the reports MUST be un-biased.
