Also from the EFRA AGM the following interseting observations. And as we know the BRCA adopt EFRA rulings so these will more than likely be applicable to us.

As Mike Manning eluded to the other day EFRA are relaxing the requirements to impose these new restrictive 3 chamber pipes eg. EFRA 3006, 3008,3009 and are basing the 2009 rules on the 2007 list which to us should mean that our current EFRA stamped silencers are legal for next year.

A couple of more alarming points is that EFRA expect Nitro to be subject to a worldwide ban within 5 to 10 years! and therefore are scaling the maximum contents down 2010 16%, 2012 10% etc so looks like Nitro engines will become Methanol and oil based only engines then ?

Tyres widths are also being looked into with manufacturers on the possiblilty of a reduction in widths in years to come ?

Another interesting note is that EFRA events are adopting 7 minute qualifying heats with a compulsory fuel stop to avoid blowing expensive motors by having to lean them out to enable 5 minutes to be reached on a tank of Fuel. Now I know we are talking Continental circuits and top drivers for world class events in that ruling but could be interesting to see if that comes down through the BRCA in future seasons ?

Having looked at the BRCA website some of the proposals for the BRCA 1/8 2009 championship look quite interesting. Subject yet to confirmation it has been proposed that the cahmpinship series is split into 3 groupings based on a drivers ranking at the start of the year, which means you are effectively competing for championship series honours amongst your equivelently ranked drivers which is great idea as it means that everyone has a chance of success rather than knowing you had no chance against the established front runners of Mark Green and co (Unless you are in the GP1 class of course, Bad luck Ash and Iain LOL )

If the proposal is confirmed then current Mendip members would line up in the following groups

Thanks Rob, yes your right a day down the track would be a good idea (and fun), but i don't think i could tell the differance between an extra half degree camber or the tyres bedding in!! Maybe Ian Might be able to help with a basic setup. EH! EH! EH! Hint Hint!!!! Or what about somebody having a go on my car and saying what they think i should do (Twin Stick)? Cheers Ange

Having not run Mugen myself then I guess Ian is your benchmark for a set up with his MRX4 being planted and quick. The problem you have though is what works for one person is probably unlikely to work for you as there are a lot of individual factors including driving style that will differ between person to person. If you take me and my 960-07 this year I ran the rear end shocker positions to the Serpent original set-up which differed from the popular opinion of how they should be tweaked because I found I was more comfortable with that for my driving style than the suggested mod.

I would suggest a good place to start but a laborious one nevertheless is to note down all your current settings and then revert everything back to the default Standard for the car and spend a day down the circuit ( In nice weather ) just making adjustments to one area at a time and seeing what difference it makes. The first thing though before this is to check the car over for excessive wear in suspension joints and that no suspension or steering parts are binding or bent as that obviously will have a detrimental effect on what you are trying to dial in or out of the car.

Hello everyone, hope you all had a good year's racing (yeh right! ). This is my first year of racing after a 15 year break, Loving it! and in that time the cars have changed quite a bit, me and Dad as you would expect are having problems setting up the car (Camber, Clutch,Toe, etc ), soooo with a bit of "cap in hand" could someone help me with a setup sheet for Mendip or give me a hint as to why the back of my car is unstable, and wants to step out on every corner, bit of a problem hay! hi mathew just reading your letter due to the club here in cornwall not running any more i have decided to sell my car and get a 1/5 scale buggy to run at our local club k.o.r.t.s what i have is a x ray nt 1 aprox 12 months old i bought it and shortly after the local tarmac club fell in to poor turn outs to which i got pretty annoyed about after spending a lot of money i have the full set up for sale every thing is in mint condition i ran it with no expense spared i have the start box (new)glow energizers recent body shell hpi astra spare tyres lots of new xray spares un opened spare glow plugs 1/2 gallon 25%fuel siro engine vey rapid starts and runs very well always treated to after run oil after meetings car always fully cleaned and oiled before being put away all you will require is radio gear to get going i am disappointed to sell this as its great fun but mendip is to far for me to travel so its got to go every thing is as new i would like to get close to £300 for the lot the car alone new is £285 if you want more info you can call me on 01209215576 or 07977049410 if your interested i can send pictures cheers mate

It is one of those hobby\sport's where as everyone quite rightly states you need really to come have a look and see what interests you the most then make up your own mind what you fancy racing. Costs over the 3 IC scales when everything is taken intio consideration including cost of ownership over a season are in a way very close and "entry level" is more a case of whether you go all out for Brand new or shop around for a used bargain. Radio gear - sticks or steer wheel is a matter of personal preference, both types are readily available. Its more a choice now of whether you go for the usual crystal driven 40mhz FM or 27Mhz AM systems or the relatively new all digital 2.4ghz waveband radios that basically auto modulate the frequency when you turn on ( So unless there are over 100+ systems turning on at the same time in the vicinity then you wont need to even worry about radio interfernce from other drivers).

On non race weekends ( or Saturdays usually if there is a club race next day) if the weather is good then sometimes its worth popping along to see if any of us are out on the track practising as we will have plenty of time to show you the cars close up and to chat more.

Thanks for the advice guys I may well pop down on Sunday and take a look, do all the meetings really last from 8am to 5pm? I can't see the wife being too happy if I went off all day to meetings!

So what type of cars do people drive in 1/10 Touring and 1/5 scale? Everyone can’t be driving a £700+ car surely??

Also do most drivers use the steering wheel & trigger type transmitter these days? I did have a little go with one of these but didn’t find it as intuitive as the ‘old skool’ sticks, would it be worth persevering with? I can see there must be an advantage with more precise control.

I'm guessing you saw the 1/8th race before it rained then!

If you are looking to start out my advice would be to start in 1/10th IC touring, 1/8thand 1/5th are a bit more specialist to begin with. There is a good mix of drivers at mendip in 1/10th at all different levels so you will be able to have some racing fun straight away! If you have some previous experience it wont take long for you to get the hang of it. Why not not come and watch some more racing before making you rmind up. Any questions feel free to ask.

Just thought I'd introduce myself as I may be interested in joining your club, I used to race electric off road buggies back in the old W.O.R.M days (Weston Off Road Models)... that’s going back to the time when everyone had Tamiya Rough Riders and Kyosho Scorpions so that gives you some idea of how long ago I'm talking about... 25 years maybe???!!!

I missed the open day but did catch the last race on Sunday just gone so I didn’t really get much of an idea of what people race? I do like the idea of IC over electric but was wondering if that may not be the best place to start? After reading a few threads it seems quite a few people are racing 1/8^th Serpents and Mugens, are these a little ‘specialist’ for a near beginner? I do own a 1/10^th nitro stadium truck but I’ve had problems keeping the engine going so I’m by no means an expert when it comes to IC!

I did like the look of the large scale cars (the wet weather made it interesting!) but again is that going to be a hard place to start? I’m thinking that if I do start with IC then maybe the 1/10^th touring cars might be my best option, I guess a lot of it may come down to how much I’m willing to spend.

Any input from members would be helpful.

sounds like a pressure problem to me, replace the fuel and pressure pipes and try again. If that doesn't work you may want to try investing in a pressure chamber - you may have seen it on my car, this device fits on the pressure pipe and is designed to maintain pressure levels as the amount of fuel in the tank changes. It could also just be the way your engine is set up - could be a mixture setting. If none of that works - try a new tank!

i would just like to thank everyone for some great racing i have had at mendip,a big thanks to Tony and his lovely wife .Val for doing a great job in her new role,

thanks to henryk and all the 5th scale drivers who i have raced battle to battle with,

i will still be racing 5th scale in the TOPSA and when the meetings are held at mendip i will be there but my new race club will be at either halifax or wombwell.

myself and my family will be moving back up north on the 14/06/08 so once again you will all be missed by myself and daniel.

we could either open the track for a couple of hours on the saturday for new people to try it out, and perhaps run a heat for newbies on the sunday during the club meeting, all together in one heat regardless of what car they have, unless we have enough numbers to go otherwise. We would have to make some simple rules, ie no off road tyres etc. We would need to give extra help to these guys, and think about marshalling arrangements. Perhaps we may also be able to provide a couple of cars for people to have a go on - come on guys dig deep in your garage!

This is the reply I recieved from the BRCA reguards insurance issue. The BRCA policy allows "potential new members" to attend a meeting on 3 occasions before needing to join the club and affiliate to the BRCA this therby covers open days and have a go sessions. So insurance is not going to be a problem.

Well there has always been a lot of talk about an open day, public can come in, buy a brca licence for the day and go out on the track. We would have to produce some flyers, put around schools, clubs and shops etc. Get in touch with Jackie at the Brca to find out the easiest way to insure people etc, if the saturday before the club meeting perhaps open the track for a couple of hours to the public .....................

Or how about getting in touch with local schools and putting on some kind of mini exhibition ............. I think we were involved with one a couple of years ago.

During the week of 9th - 17th of August (national motorsport week) The BRCA have asked all clubs to put on some sort of promotional event at their club and I thought as the 10th of August is now one of our club meetings we could maybe think of something so MMMRC could join in and do something to hopefully encourage new members to our sport. Hi Darren,sorry cant say as i have never had one.But from what i have been told the are good .Not the most popular motor used by 1/8th.But than as i say it is what you want and what you can afford to hell with what people say you should have.Kev Taylor runs a orion in the 1/10th class and it is fast,as for reliability i have no idea.Yon canbuy the GRP which is the NINJA,itis a promotion pack.Motor,pipe,manifold,base ball cap and other bits all in a box.I think this is a tuned motor and its all for about £250.00 from Mike Manning.Give hime a call 01935479361 and he will give you the correct price.If you need time to think and need a motor come and see me on sunday 13/04/08 and i am sure i can help you with one of our spare motors till you sort your self out.Wont be a world class motor but will get you giong in the mean while,or give me call 01935 822161 after 6pm.

Hi Darren,engine choice is up to you.We have been using a Ninja for the past two years and have had great service from it.Not the fastest and not the best.My son Ashley seems to hang around the b and c finals at nationals with this motor,he has even won a B final at nations with it.So for club level racing i think it is a good engine and is not giong to break the bank.We also have a Mega MF 9 which is very very fast and is made by nova rossi,cant tell you much about it as we have only done two meetings with it.Only problem with the MF 9 is it around the £600.00 mark.Give Mike a ring on 01935 479361 he is the Serpent agent in the South West and is all ways at track side on race days.Come over on the 13/04/08 regardless of the i will be there,and have a chat.

So any thoughts on the club promotion day or date yet ? As the webmaster for http://www.weston-super-maremotorclub.com/ I have linked in the MMMRC site and the club is interested in arranging some sort of social event in their calender with with us at Mendip in which they can be shown what model car racing is all about so actually the BRCA recomendation of an open day would probably fit the bill nicely.

1/8th are quicker than 1/10th!!

That sounds like quite a good deal on a 960 - the best thing for you to do is to come to the next club meeting april 13th, see what happens and decide for yourself!!

Both classes are fun and fast, and both have good following at club although 1/10th has a few more drivers.

can any one help me i have been out of racing for about 6 years now and would like to start up again the thing is im trying to deside what class to start up 1/8 or 1/10 i have been offerd a serpent 960 07 for 200 pound so im thinkin that , but the 1/10 just seems quicker and more fun . can any one help me deside ? i think 1/8 would be better as im not the most patiint person and would get in a bit of a fiddle with repairing a 1/10 scale as i have huge hand . if any one could help me deside it would be good help.. Glad to hear you're interested in racing 1/8th. There are a number of cars available, I would avoid the schumacher as its not an out and out 1/8th racer compared to what else is available. Mugen, Kyosho and Serpent are the ones to go for.

You'll be best off coming to the next meeting and having a chat with drivers, finding out which cars are run etc. Feel free to email me iain_milford@spring.com

well the day turned out pretty good in the end. I qualified 6th in the A final! The track for the main was very slippy to say the least. I got off to a good start, quickly got to second, after I had a dice with Mark Green himself and took him on the sweeper onto the straight! Had an on off dice with Neil Diver for most of the race and ended up in 3rd place at the end!! Felt well happy especially as I raced Mr Green and beat him ... all be it at less than half race speed but hey who cares!!

Following a committee meeting where the Calendar dates were reviewed and with the best interest of the club, the dates remain as published with the exception of the "Club Round 7" date has changed from the 3rd August to the 10th August.

Kyosho Test Weekend

well saturday was wet and unfortunate for several drivers who had travelled from 'afar' - a good day for a wet set up!!

Sunday was slightly better however I think saturday had put everyone off as there only a couple of club members present!! Still we managed to get some work done on cars and engines and inbetween the showers the track did dry.

Lets hope for better weather this weekend ... ;-)

Kev Nash running his converted 1/8th rallycross car on Sunday evening?? It looked great, an 1/8th off road rally cross car with a phatboy wide Ford Focus bodyshell, slick tyres and he had even adapted a two speed box for it!! It looked wicked going round the track, diving under the brakes, you could just picture someone sat inside!

now I think this may have been mentioned before but .... Could this be a new series?? With the price of a new hyper 7 under £200, a couple of extra bits (bodyshell, tyres etc) this could be a cheap and fun way of getting into the sport ...

At Mendip we have a fairly even mix of Serpent and Mugen across both scales, with a few drivers running the Xray NT1 in 1/10th onroad.

Generally there isn't much to choose between each make, although everyone has their favourites!

Good to hear you're interested in on-road racing!

I would generally suggest that 1/10th 200mm is the place to start, however it sounds like you already have experience at different scales off road. We race 1/10th 200mm (touring cars and open ie lola shells) 1/8th (the quickest form of model motor racing) and 1/5th GT/Touring etc

If you're local why not come down to our next meeting, feb 17th when you can have a look at different cars, chat to some drivers and see what takes your fancy!

Have a look - they really are unbelievable. I'm sure I speak for all members when I wish the Halifax crew all the best and hope that the damage is not too bad.

This mainly depends on which fuel you run, however it is a good habit to always run the fuel out of the engine and add afterrun oil. You can get specialist afterrunoil from the major manufacturers, although if you dont have any 3in1 oil will suffice. When you have finished for the day follow these steps to help keep your engine running for longer!!

- To remove the fuel from the engine, simply remove the fuel pipe to the carb and start the engine, the engine will tick over for a few seconds and then shut off.

- Remove the air filter from the carb, squeeze in a few drops of oil, replace the air filter and turn the engine over on the starter box opening the carb to make sure the oil gets into the engine ok.

Follow this procedure and it will help your engine live longer!!

Earlier I mentioned it depends which fuel you are running, well thats because some fuels have a higher oil content than others. As rule Tornado will ROT your engine very quickly if you fail to remove the fuel. Tornado does not have a very high oil content and (from experience!) I have seen engines start to rust within hours of use! Spark & Runner Time have a very high oil content, however I would still follow the above steps just in case. Also, make sure that you store your engine in a dry, warm place at home. The airing cupboard is ideal but may not go down well at home!!

If your engine is tight through compression thats generally good, an old worn engine will turn over much more freely (unless its seized. LOL) as it can't generate as much compression due to wear between the piston and liner.

You'll probably find it'll free up a bit in time as you run it. Also some engines particularly if its an ABC piston and liner are tight when cold and free up as they reach normal running temperature. This may explain the increase in revs you've observed as it warms up, but likely its just in need of a mixture adjustment.

To adjust the idle screw , I guess everyone has their own favorite method, but I do it this way. I wouldn't worry about the actual idle speed initially as this will vary as you adjust the mixture and you may need to adjust the closed throttle position at times as you do your mixture adjustment. The main thing is to keep the engine running at this point so you don't need to keep restarting. So once you've got a reasonable idle let the motor idle for a few seconds and then open the throttle quickly. Watch the exhaust and listen to the sound.

If it burbles and chucks out lots of smoke before picking up then its too rich, screw in the idle mixture by 1/8th of a turn.

If it hesitates before picking up the revs with no smoke, then its too lean, so open the idle mixture by 1/8th of a turn.

Repeat this so that you can open the throttle and the revs pick up quickly and smoothly. When you've achieved this re-check the main mixture setting and the throttle idle position, then repeat as many times as necessary until your happy. remember make only small adjustments, check the response and repeat. You should end up with an engine that runs, throttles smoothly and idles reliably.

I think it has been run for one season (so the seller told me), but it might be older - its a ZX 12. I have managed to get it started and tuned the high speed needled by following Henryks advice (thanks Henryk), and it is going OK. Are the symptoms likely to point at a worn out engine?

Also, when it idles, as it warms up, it start to increase rpm and eventually turns the wheels even though no throtttle is applied, is this just the low speed needle in need of tuning?

Finally, the body shell is a bit tired, do all 200mm bodyshells fit or are they model specific?

It may be you engine is just tight, the way I'd approach it is take the plug out and turn it over by hand, it should be free but you may feel a bit of resistance just as the piston is at the top of the stroke. If it feels OK turn it over on the started box with fuel, this way you'll get fuel into it and also expel any excess, good idea to put a rag over the head so you don't spray fuel everywhere. Next I'd put the plug in tight but then slacken it of 1/4 to 1/2 turn so it won't come out but just leaks a bit so you can turn it over on the starter box. Start it like this and once its running tighten the plug back up.

If it cuts when you open the throttle if there's no smoke out the exhaust its probably too lean and needs the main needle unscrewing a bit (1/4 turn at a time) to richen the mixture. If you get lots of smoke as it dies its probably too rich so you need to screw in the needle a bit (1/4 turn). Once you've got the engine running and roughly throttling you can fine tune the mixture from there.

p.s. after use flush it through with some after-run oil.

Following earlier posts I have now purchased a second hand Team Magic 4GS. Very pleased with the quality etc, but I do have trouble:

I put it on the starter box with the glow plug etc, but when I push down the starter box will often fail to turn the fly wheel (it is not fouling on the chassis). If I loosen the glow plug (let air in) it turns fine. The fly wheel is quite hard to turn by hand
On a couple of occasions it has managed to turn the flywheel and I have got it started, but as soon as I apply throttle it just dies.

Any help/ideas greatly appreciated. Hoping it is not in need of a new engine - but thats the risk with second hand.

Also, on a more genral front, when I have finished for the day, should I remove fuel from the engine etc, and if so how? any pointers at websites with advice would be good?

What would you like to see on your club website.

The Results section is next on my list to do and I've quite a list of areas to address, but I'd like to hear from you as to what you would like to see on your club website.

To start things off, we need a section about us as a club, How we started, what we do, types of car we race, site facilities we have, our plans for the future. We probably want separate sections for 1/10th, 1/8th, 1/5th to cover Reviews, Advice, Tech Tips, Set-ups, FAQ etc.

Site Content. This is probably the hardest part and requires input from all quarters. So please contribute. If you would like to write Reviews, Articles, Tips, Advice, Set-ups etc. please do.

There must be loads of photos from various events at the circuit, why not let us all se them.

Welcome to the new Forum. I hope you find this forum easy to use. Hope fully this is it, as far as major changes are concerned and there will be no need to change things again, with regards to registering, creating accounts etc, etc. That's not to say we can't change anything , so please leave me any feedback or suggestions about the forum or the site in general and we'll see what we can do.

I will leave the link to the old forum there for a while, but would hope to phase it out as soon as possible.
