Maria Margaretha Suliyanti (msuliyanti@yahoo.com) was born on March 10th, 1959 in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. She received her Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree at Physics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 1985. She started her work at Research Center for Physics, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Serpong, Indonesia in 1986 and, currently, is appointed a full professor there. She studied at Graduate School of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia where she acquired her Master’s Degree of Engineering (M.Eng.) in 2001 after completing a thesis submission under the guidance of Dr. Koo Hendrik Kurniawan. On September 2006, upon finishing a dissertation submission supervised by Prof. Sardy S. and Prof. Anung Kusnowo, she graduated from Faculty of Engineering, University Indonesia, Jakarta and was conferred degree of Doctor of Engineering (Dr.Eng.) in Opto-Electrotechniques and Laser Applications Engineering. The topic of her doctoral dissertation was Laser-Induced Plasma at Reduced Pressure and Its Application for Solid Organic Sample Analysis.

In 1990 she was awarded a one-year training course “Advanced Industrial Technology” at National Research Laboratory of Metrology, Tsukuba, Japan, in Thermal Measurement Section with the topic of Thermal Diffusivity Measurements by Laser Flash Method, sponsored by Japanese government through the program of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), immediately followed by Invitational Researcher Program under AIST Fellowship in NRLM, Tsukuba, Japan with research topic of Measurements and Evaluation of Thermophysical Properties of Solid Materials for another year. During January 9th till 30th,1999, she attended the general exchange program under the Cooperative Program with Asian Countries, at Fukui University, Fukui, Japan by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). During February 7th till 17th, 1999, she was also invited to attend The Asian Science Seminar on High Power Laser Matter Interaction in Institute of Laser Engineering Osaka University, JAPAN under JSPS Fellowship. During October 21st till November 3rd, 2003, she attended The International Training Course on Processing and Application of Laser Technology” Wuhan, China held by China government, followed by International Training Workshop on the Application of Information & Energy Optoelectronics, in Wuhan, China in 2004. She was also invited by India government to attend the training of thermal barrier coating at International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy & New Material at Hyderabad, India under ASEAN-India collaboration. On December 2015, she conducted several laboratory visitations to Prof. Koji Hatanaka at Research Center for Applied Science (RCAP) Sinica Academia Taipei, Taiwan (R.O.C) located at 128 Section 2, Academia Rd., Nankang, Taipei 11529, Taiwan, and to Prof. Yong-Honn Cho, the director of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST  Center for LED Research, National Research Laboratory for Nano-Bio-Photonics, Department of Physics and KI for the Nano Century, KAIST, Daejeon, 305-701, Republic of Korea.

Her main research interest is mechanistic and experimental studies on laser-induced plasma and its applications to various fields including spectrochemical analysis and laser material processing. She has been working to develop new applications of laser-induced breakdown plasma spectroscopy (LIBS) for spectrochemical analysis, especially those related to organic analysis, and LIBS based technique for soil pollution analysis, especially farmland and wood analysis, and new materials using PLD technique and nanomaterial.

She served as Head of Instrumentation Physics and Optoelectronics (2013-2015) and Head of Laser Research Group (2015-2019) at the Research Center for Physics, Indonesia Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Indonesia. She has authored and coauthored more than 50 papers published in reputable and peer-reviewed scientific journals, and have more than 10 registered patents. She was the Executive Secretary of Indonesian physical society (IPS) between 2007 to 2014, and the Executive Secretary of Indonesian Optical Society between 2015 to 2017.

She has carried out many collaborative research works at Maju Makmur Mandiri Research Centre in Jakarta until now. Currently, her research is mainly focused on LIBS application for analyzing organic, wood, NORM samples and Nanomaterial and its applications under Laser Research Group in Research Center for Physics, LIPI.
